Jeff Howard, Chief Operating Officer

With more than two decades working in the sports industry, Jeff currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Gomez Howard Group, overseeing the firm's business development activities. Under Jeff's auspices, the Gomez Howard Group has delivered successful public relations and community engagement activities directly linked to Colorado organizations and businesses, including public campaign and messaging strategies, meeting facilitation, large and small-scale events, digital media strategies, and online programming as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jeff spent six years at the University of Denver and more than two as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. In his capacity as Senior Associate Athletic Director, he supported key initiatives of the Vice Chancellor for Athletics, Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations while also overseeing the media relations and technical services departments. In addition to the responsibility of building and maintaining strong community partnerships that promote the University and its athletics programs to multiple constituencies nationally and internationally, Jeff also directed special programs that include the biannual Athletic Hall of Fame and the annual Floyd Theard Golf Tournament. Howard moved to Athletics and Recreation after serving as the University's Executive Director of Alumni Relations.

Prior to his roles at the University of Denver, Jeff served on the Communications Division leadership team and directed the Education and Outreach, Community Relations and Career Services departments in a second stint at the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Key initiatives under his management included the Olympic Ambassador Program, Managing Victory, and all Olympic Ideals and Values programming. Jeff moved back to the USOC after serving as Managing Director for Public and Media Relations/Spokesperson at the NCAA in the early 2000s. Prior to his senior leadership roles, he also worked as a Media Relations Assistant for the Denver Broncos and Sports Producer for KWGN-TV in Denver.

Always looking to guide the next generation of sports public relations professionals, as an adjunct professor at Metropolitan State University and the University of Denver, Jeff taught courses on sports management and governance. Given his vast sports background, he continues to speak on subjects relating to the Olympic Ideals and Values and was selected as a presenter for an international symposium on "Olympic Values in the 21st Century" prior to the 2012 London Olympic Games. Most recently, he was invited to speak with students at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Jeff received his bachelor's degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver and his master's degree from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in sports management. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Colorado Golf Association – chairing the Nominating, Governance, and Diversity Taskforce committees.
