The Challenge

Gynecologic cancers often present with subtle or easily overlooked symptoms and, with the exception of cervical cancer, lack a screening test. This makes symptom awareness critically important. The Colorado Gynecologic Cancer Alliance (CGCA) utilizes Wear Teal Day to elevate public understanding of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and continues outreach through the month of September as part of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Given the crowded health awareness landscape, GHG sought to expand reach beyond traditional audiences and create meaningful engagement across media platforms by running complementary media outreach and social media campaigns. Ensuring consistent, accurate messaging while mobilizing media partners and the broader community — particularly within a limited campaign window — required a strategic and highly coordinated communications effort.

GHG Approach

GHG  implemented an integrated media outreach and social media strategy to elevate CGCA’s Colorado Wear Teal Day and Gynecologic Cancer Awareness campaign. Media were first engaged through the delivery of bags containing teal (the color associated with ovarian cancer) items and awareness information to 130 Denver and Grand Junction representatives. Outreach via media pitches, personal communications and social media encouraged media to participate by wearing teal on-air and share ovarian cancer facts.

By aligning media outreach with a strong digital strategy, GHG ensured consistent messaging while maximizing audience engagement. The approach fostered active participation from on-air talent and created multiple touchpoints for the public to engage with critical awareness messaging.
